Steve Schaefer

Chief Executive Officer

Steve joined HealthSouth in December 2008. He has more than 20 years of leadership experience in the healthcare field. Under his leadership, the hospital has built upon its community reputation for delivering high quality care and exceptional patient experiences. The hospital exceeds benchmarks in patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes and employee satisfaction.

Steve has extended HealthSouth’s reach and commitment in the community with his involvement with The Resource Exchange, Leadership Pikes Peak, the American Heart Association, American Stroke Association and the Memorial Task Force.

Nathaniel Miller

Nathaniel Miller M.D.

Medical Director

Dr. Nathaniel Miller is the medical director of HealthSouth Colorado Springs and serves as the associate medical director of HealthSouth Littleton. He received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Denver and a master’s degree in organic chemistry from CU Denver. He furthered his medical education by receiving his medical doctorate at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University and by completing his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Marianjoy in Wheaton, Illinois. Dr. Miller is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation through the ABPMR and AOA as well as traumatic brain injury. His interests include traumatic brain injury, stroke and spasticity management.

Michelle Achterhoff

Michelle Achterhof, LSW

Director of Case Management

Michelle joined the HealthSouth Rehabilitation team in March 2013. She has over 10 years of experience in the field of social work. Michelle earned her bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. She then went on to earn her master’s degree in social work from Newman University in Colorado Springs. Michelle enjoys participating in community events supporting research for MS and the American Heart Association.

Stephanie Davis

Stephanie Davis, CPA


Stephanie joined HealthSouth of Colorado Springs in November 2013 with over nine years of financial accounting experience. Prior to joining the HealthSouth team, Stephanie was a manager in the healthcare audit and attestation practice of a regional accounting firm within their Colorado Springs office. Stephanie holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. She is a certified public accountant in the State of Colorado and holds memberships in the American Institute of CPAs and Healthcare Financial Management Association. 


Carley Hyman

Carley Hyman, BSN, RN, CRRN

Business Development Director

Carley joined HealthSouth of Colorado Springs in December 2008 as a nurse liaison and moved into the director of marketing operations position July 2013. She graduated from the University of Alaska, Anchorage in 2001 with bachelor's in nursing science with leadership honors. Areas of nursing practice include; critical care, high risk orthopedics, rural nursing and inpatient rehabilitation. She became a CRRN December 2014. She is an avid triathlete and enjoys spending time with her children and dog.

Cindy Nordell

Cindy has been a registered nurse for more than 20 years and holds a master’s degree in business administration. In her previous career with Centura Health, she served in a hospital leadership role for three years. As a nurse leader, she loves building a passionate team of caregivers focused on excellent customer service.

Kiran Pandit

Kiran Pandit, M.D.

Attending Physician

Dr. Pandit received his medical training from Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences in India and the University of Louisville’s Internal Medicine Residency Program as well as the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program in Louisville, Ky., where he also completed his residency. He is a member of the House Staff Council at the University of Louisville, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Academy of Physiatrists, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and the Greater Louisville Medical Society. Dr. Pandit has earned many awards and honors, is bilingual and enjoys basketball, golf, and running in his spare time.

Patrick Quirk, PT

Director of Therapy Operations

Patrick is the director of therapy operations for HealthSouth Colorado Springs. He joined the HealthSouth team in 2001; it was then he realized his true passion and talent for rehabilitation. He has more than 13 years of clinical experience. Patrick’s physical therapy career began at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California in 1998. He was born and raised in California where he went on to get his physical therapy degree from the California State University of Sacramento.

Paula Wegert

Paula Wegert, M.D.

Attending Physician

Dr. Wegert joined HealthSouth in July 2009. She completed medical school at the Medical College of Ohio, and completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio.  She is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a subspecialty in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.

Paula Wegert, M.D. is an independent private practice physician whose office is located at the hospital.
